Topic description

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have found significant applications in road monitoring, offering a versatile and efficient solution for infrastructure assessment and maintenance. Equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced sensors, UAVs can capture detailed images of road networks, including highways, bridges, and remote or challenging terrain. These aerial images are valuable for assessing road conditions, identifying cracks, potholes, and other damage, as well as monitoring traffic flow and congestion. UAVs also enable quick and cost-effective inspections, reducing the need for manual assessments and ensuring the safety of personnel. The data collected from UAVs can be processed and analyzed to facilitate timely road repairs and improvements, contributing to safer and more reliable transportation infrastructure.

Topic objectives and methodology

For this study, we will focus on study elements as listed below and we will fix them after discussion with the candidate based on her/his background and interests:

  • UAV-based images, nadir viewing, oblique or horizontal
  • Still frames or videogrammetry
  • Visible camera, thermal camera, or the fusion
  • Road health monitoring, road signs monitoring, or infrastructure monitoring
